Dog photography is teamwork
During dog photography, the owner isn’t just a background figure—they play a crucial role in creating successful and great images.
A photo truly comes to life when the dog is calm and enjoys the session as a 'task' or a 'game.' Active participation from the owner is essential, as they know their dog’s personality, habits, and how to motivate or calm them. The dog’s behavior and emotional connection with their owner directly affect the final images.
The 'instructions' aren’t given by the photographer, as they usually don’t know the dog, and the dog won’t pay attention to them—it will look to its owner instead. It’s up to the owner to guide the dog into the right position or direction. Well-timed treats, toys, or familiar sounds are all tools the owner can use effectively during the session. It also helps if the dog remains engaged and attentive throughout.
Good communication between the owner and the photographer is also crucial for a successful dog photoshoot. As the photographer, I explain the poses or how the dog should be positioned, and the owner guides their pet accordingly. This collaboration ensures a smooth session and results in images that make the owner happy and the photographer satisfied.
As you can see, a photoshoot is a team effort, and the owner works at least as much as the photographer.
