Taking photos among spring flowers

Part 1 – Early Spring Flowers

If you love nature, photo sessions with blooming fruit trees or flowers are for you. Let’s see what opportunities we have in Budapest, whether it’s portrait, maternity, couples or dog photography.

Blooming fruit trees provide a fairytale-like backdrop for photos. In very warm weather, the flowering periods of different species may overlap, but typically the almond blooms first, followed by apricot and peach, then cherry, sour cherry, and plum, and finally pear and apple.

Some early cherry varieties bloom as early as March, but the must-see Japanese cherry blossoms, for example at Tóth Árpád Promenade in Buda, appear in April. The first flowers start to appear in the last week of March, but full bloom takes a little longer.

The magnolia, also known as the lily tree, blooms before the leaves emerge. After the barren winter months, it provides a striking sight with its huge white, pink or purple flowers. For some varieties, a much more modest second bloom can be expected in late summer or autumn. Magnolias can be found, for example, on Margaret Island, in the Zugló Japanese Garden or in the Buda Botanical Garden.

Fun facts: According to records, Chinese monks cultivated magnolias as early as the 7th century and considered them a symbol of purity. There are many superstitions associated with it: planting it in front of the house brings happiness, and planting it behind the house brings unexpected wealth. It’s only been present in Hungary since the end of the 18th century.

The daffodil is a truly colorful sight with its cheerful, varied colours. Pick-your-own opportunities are becoming increasingly popular, and you can also take photos in these daffodil fields, for example in the garden of the Bálint family in Százhalombatta.

If it's April, you shouldn’t miss tulips. About 15 km from Budapest, in Pilisborosjenő, you can find the tulip field of Kevelyhegy, which can also be visited with dogs. The Tulipgarden in the Danube Bend is also a pet-friendly location. According to their website, starting from Easter, 70,000 tulips await visitors every weekend for about 1 month.

If you visit daffodil or tulip fields with a dog, your four-legged friend must be on a leash and it can only stay on the path between the beds. I often see photos where a dog is looking at the camera in the middle of a flower bed. Let’s avoid this situation and don’t sacrifice a single flower for the sake of photos.

Speaking of dog photos, it’s worth mentioning wildflowers. For example, on Margaret Island, the buttercups that form a carpet in some places or the field of clematis that sparkles in the backlight (i.e. when photographed against the sun) offer a colorful spring background.
