What if I have a few extra kilos on me?
Curvy shapes to photograph
Recently, a lady wanted to come for a glamour photo shoot, but she was shy and worried about her weight. I thought I’s share some thoughts about this topic.
During the photo shoot, there’s no one else, just you and me and I'll do my best to make you feel comfortable and confident. As a female photographer, I think I can understand the problem more easily, because let's face it, most of us don't look like a supermodel, especially over a certain age.
Before the session, we discuss in detail what you want, what you aren’t satisfied with, and what we can do to make the best photos possible. You don't have to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.
Choosing the right clothes and colours, lights, poses, angles and crops is very important.
I can highlight certain features with lights or I can hide other body parts with shadows. It makes a difference if you face the camera or not. If you don't want your waist or arms to be visible, for example, a narrower crop may be better. The right poses can beautifully highlight your feminine lines.

Perhaps one of the most important things is to choose clothes which make you feel comfortable and confident. It's a good idea to try on your clothes before the session, because if it has become a little too tight and short since you last wore them, you'll be stressed about it. The situation is similar with new clothes: ‘I liked it back in the store...’
Large patterns, dots and flowers, horizontal stripes, shiny materials emphasize curvy shapes, and strong colours attract the eye. On the other hand, for example, the black color and vertical stripes make you slimmer. Instead of a top and trousers/skirts of the same colour, choose a darker bottom with a lighter top. Avoid oversized clothing as it will make you look bigger. Similarly, too tight clothes are unfavourable. It’s also worth considering that thin materials show everything.
During post production, there are many opportunities to emphasize your advantageous side and to tone down your side you like less. It's very easy to make someone slimmer in Photoshop, and we'll also discuss whether you want to use this option. The degree of retouching varies, but I certainly won’t make you thin beyond recognition, because I think it’s important to keep your identity.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I hope we’ll meet soon and take your series as well.
